Feb 25, 2025An herbal supplement called Kratom is stirring controversy in central Ohio as opposing voices debate on whether the product is saving lives or taking lives.
Columbus mother Jennifer Young contacted ABC 6 On Your Side Investigates after she claimed the powdery substance killed her son. His autopsy showed a "lethal" level of Mitragynine found in his system which is a component of Kratom. Her son bought the supplement over the counter in a shop near their home. Young said he took it for several years to help him with his anxiety.
"It has been traumatizing," Young told ABC 6 Investigator Lisa Rantala.
What is Kratom and why are there no regulations on it in Ohio even after the federal government called is a "drug of concern?"
