Samsung releases smartwatch aimed at tracking sleep quality

Jun 14, 2023Jun 14, 2023

Samsung Electronics has introduced its latest line of smartwatches, called "One UI 5," which has features to help users track and improve their sleep quality.

Older adults are more inclined to have sleep problems, such as sleep apnea and insomnia, according to a study published in 2021.

This latest Samsung offering has several features that aim to improve sleep quality. First, it records sleep-related metrics such as snoring, blood oxygen levels and sleep cycles. It also contains sleep-coaching features that generate insights into one's sleeping pattern and how it can be improved. Third, its green LED light changes to infrared sensors to minimize light distractions during sleep.

The new watch line has three main goals: helping users understand their sleeping patterns, building healthy sleeping habits, and developing an environment that is more conducive to sleep.

The association between quality of sleep and quality of life has long been a subject of intense academic interest. A study published in 2021 found that the relationship between sleep quality and physical/mental parameters of quality of life remains consistent, regardless of sleep duration.

"Samsung is dedicated to delivering a comprehensive health experience and empowering users to reach their wellness goals," said Hon Pak, VP and head of digital health at Samsung Electronics, in a statement. "Now more than ever, we believe this starts with getting a good night's sleep."

The latest contribution of Samsung into the area of sleep improvement is nothing new. Several startups are developing apps to improve sleep quality and help clinicians diagnose sleep disorders. A Hong Kong-based developer, Enerjoy, is releasing a newer version of ShutEye, a mobile sleep tracking device that helps users better understand the quality of their sleep and alerts users to potential illnesses.
